Scientists from the University of Nottingham have discovered how to make the most effective bleach disinfectant for the long-term use of people in hospital.
The team, led by Professor David Miller from the School of Chemistry, have been working for more than 30 years to develop a bleach disinfecting solution for human use.
The product is called Tonic B, and it can be used on humans for five years.
It is currently available in Britain as Tonic 4.
It contains 100 per cent bleach.
The researchers have developed a new method to extract the essential element chlorine from the bleach.
They found that it is only present in very low amounts in the solution.
This means that it can also be extracted from water, which can then be used as a bleach.
Tonic is made by adding 100 per year of water to a solution containing 1 per cent chlorine.
This solution is then diluted to give a product that has the desired colour.
Tonics colour is a mixture of cyan, yellow, orange and red, and when diluted further to give white, it turns into Tonic.
“We know that chlorine is present in the atmosphere and is absorbed in the body, so it is possible that we can create an agent that is more effective at the skin level and also on the skin surface, and that will be more water soluble and will be less toxic to humans,” said Professor Miller.
“So we have found a way of getting a good amount of chlorine from a solution of water and reducing the amount of water required to make it so that we will be able to extract that from the solution in a way that we know will be safe to use.”
The study was published in the Journal of Clinical Chemistry.
The scientists hope to work with other companies to develop similar products.
“The fact that it’s already been tested on humans and we’ve been able to demonstrate that it works on humans means that we’ve got some success there,” said Dr Maria Schuster, who co-authored the study with Professor Miller and their colleague, Dr David Prentice.
“But there’s still more work to be done.
So, we’re working to make Tonic into something that can be safely used on animals, so that’s a big step forward.”
Professor Miller said that Tonic has been tested in a small number of human patients and found that its effectiveness in those patients was similar to that of a standard bleach disinfection.
“I think that’s really exciting because it is so safe, that’s the main reason that we are working on it, is to make sure that we’re able to make these products safely for the human population,” he said.
“And if we can do that, we will then be able have a very, very long time of life and, ultimately, our childrens children can have the same experience.”
Tonic comes in four different formulations, the most common being the Tonic 2 which contains 10 per cent of the original bleach and is more commonly used as an ingredient in household bleach.
This bleach is produced by boiling water for two hours and then removing the excess water.
Tonia is a blend of Tonic and Tonic 3 which contains a total of 100 per per cent pure bleach.
“This is the only bleach that is a perfect blend of the two,” said Prof Miller.
Professor Miller believes that Tonia has been used in hospitals for over 30 years, although there is some evidence that some hospitals are using other disinfectants.
He also said that there is evidence that Tonics bleach can be found in water supplies in some hospitals, which is not something he can confirm.
He believes that if people in the UK continue to use Tonic for at least five years, then the water supplies may be able, in theory, to produce a very safe product.
Professor Schuster added that there are other disinfectant products available that are similar to Tonic, and said that they are also safe.
“Some of these products contain high levels of chlorine, which means that they will kill the bacteria that are causing the problem, but there are also products that are not as good as Tonia,” she said.
Professor David Pamp, from the Department of Chemistry at the University, said that the research team had discovered that the amount that is contained in the Tonics solution was “just right”.
He added that the team had been able, by combining the chemicals together in a new way, to create a “perfect blend”.
“We’ve found that the formula that is used is very well designed to combine the ingredients, so we think that it will work very well for a range of applications,” he explained.
“It is also an excellent solvent, which will make it a very reliable product for the use of the environment, for use in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, and for the manufacture of cosmetic products, so there’s some very exciting things that we have discovered in this study.”
